Bitter Sweet Love by Jennifer Armentrout ~ Brittany’s 5 Star Review

6122346_orig.jpgIn a sizzling prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.

Dez wasn’t just Jasmine’s crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her erything…right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn’t help that Jas’s father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he’s back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn’t taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again…

Being the huge (maybe… ridiculously obsessed?) Jennifer Armentrout fan that I am, I was ALL over Bitter Sweet Love and couldn’t wait to get my greedy little hands on this book. This is the prequel novella that gives us a glimpse into the world that JLA has created in The Dark Elements series.

In Bitter Sweet Love, we meet Jasmine and Dez, both unusual characters– gargoyle Wardens. I had long ago learned my lesson when doubting Jennifer’s “odd” choice in characters… if she can make me fall in love with an alien, then she’s a genius and I’ll read anything and everything that she wants to write. The characters in this series are no different… I’m already attached! Jas has loved Dez since they were children. They were best friends and inseparable until Dez disappears without a word after Jas’ father announces that they are to be mated. It’s hard for Jas not to take that personally. So when Dez returns three years later to claim her as his own, Jas has some reservations… and conditions. She gives Dez seven days. Seven days to prove himself and make amends, while she has some fun of her own.

I. Love. Dez. I’m kind of bummed that the rest of this series will focus on other characters, because he’s worked his way into my heart and I will miss him terribly. He doesn’t hold any punches when delivering swoon-worthy moments. He’s all grown up, gorgeous and fierce, and ready to prove himself to Jasmine. Ready to show her that it’s only been her all these years. She’s a tough one to crack, but he’s up for the challenge.

The chemistry between Jasmine and Dez is undeniable, and I love that they had a solid foundation to go on already… no insta-love here. That’s rare with novellas, I find. I’m also loving the little glimpse into the lives of the characters that this series will focus on. We meet Layla and Zayne and I can already tell I’m going to fall head over heels for them! Layla is a real sweetheart, but I have a feeling she’s going to be one tough cooke and I can’t wait to see where her story leads. Being that this was only a novella, I still had no trouble at all connecting with the characters, and JLA’s writing was, as always, fantastic. She’s created a truly fascinating, captivating world for us to lose ourselves in and I’m sure I’ll become just as obsessed with this series as with her others.
